Maui County Proposes Increase to Timeshare Taxes

Issue Brief

On March 25, 2012, the Mayor of Maui released his initial Budget for the 2013 fiscal year which included his proposed tax rates for all property tax classifications. For the second year in a row, the Mayor has placed the largest tax increase on the timeshare industry, proposing a $1.15 increase to the current rate of $15.00. This 7% increase, on top of the 8% increase last year, would mean that timeshare owners would have seen a 15% increase in their property tax rate over the past two years. These increases come without any rational justification from Maui County Council other than they want the industry to pay at least the same amount of taxes as last year. If this tax passes, timeshare owners will see an increase of 7% in their property taxes without any reasonable justification from the County Council as to why this increase is necessary.

Position/Call to Action

ARDA-ROC and ARDA strongly appose any increase to property taxes in Maui. ARDA-ROC encourages each and every owner of timeshare on Maui to call or to write the Mayor, as well as the County Council Members, to voice your opposition to this tax increase. Numerous timeshare companies, their employees, interested community members, as well as ARDA and ARDA-ROC will be in attendance for the community budget hearing that will take place at 6:00 pm on April 11, 2012, at the Lahaina Civic Center, along with the Maui County Council Budget Hearing at 9:00 am at the County Council building (click here for the full list of hearings). You can click here to visit the Tax Resource Center to obtain email addresses and phone numbers of the Council Members, sample talking points that you can use in your communications, and sample owner and employee testimony. Please remember that this is the Mayor's budget proposal, so you will be asking each Council Member to reject that proposal and keep the property tax rate for timeshare at $15.00.
