Protecting Yourself from Fraud
Wherever a market exists, deceptive or fraudulent activity can also be present. The same is true for the timeshare resale market. Unfortunately, there are resale companies that use fraudulent gimmicks or perform illegitimate actions in an attempt to deceive timeshare owners for their own financial gain.
Although several state governments are actively investigating consumer complaints and pursuing just course of action against such companies, ARDA and ARDA-ROC recommend that consumers always take precautions with their timeshare interests. We want to help you be a vigilant consumer, not a victim.
6 Red Flags of a Resale Scam
Know the signs and when to be wary:
|
If you’re contacted unsolicited
by a company regarding the sale of your timeshare or the elimination of
maintenance fees; |
|
If an offer sounds too
good to be true (it likely is); |
|
If you’re asked to pay
an upfront fee for a future “service”; |
|
Promises to modify or
cancel your timeshare contractual obligations; or |
|
Any call or mailing offering to transfer your paid-off ownership to another party; |
|
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a representative of ARDA or ARDA-ROC (ARDA and ARDA-ROC DO NOT contact owners unless first requested by the owner to do so. ARDA and ARDA-ROC DO NOT perform any resale services.) |
