Republicans swept elections for all statewide offices in 2010 electing Governor Robert Bentley, Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey, and Attorney General Strange. The Lieutenant Governor also serves as the President of the Alabama Senate. The Alabama Legislature will also be controlled by Republicans for the first time since 1874 during the upcoming term.

The Republicans hold a 65 – 40 majority in the 105 member House of Representatives. Republicans also hold 22 seats in the Senate with 12 held by Democrats and one independent member.   The Alabama legislative session begins on February 7, 2012.
